AVEDA raises money for clean water

The results from our Earth Month initiatives are in, and we couldn’t be more proud of what the Aveda community has achieved. Earth Month 2010 was a fantastic success in making a difference for clean water initiatives, worldwide. We raised more than $3.5 million for global and local projects!

Although one in seven people lacks access to clean water, inspiring leaders worldwide are, through the Global Greengrants-Aveda partnership, taking action to protect and improve water quality and access in their own communities.

One Goal, Many Solutions

The Global Greengrants Fund understands that defending and improving access to the world’s most precious resource takes many forms. Practicing sustainable agriculture keeps toxic pesticides out of water tables. Planting trees keeps water tables replenished and clean. In short, providing communities with grants to protect their water resources is the most sustainable, effective strategy to ensure that clean water is a right and a reality, not a privilege.

Lighting the Way to Clean Water

Over the last four years, Aveda has made a remarkable commitment to protecting clean water and water rights through the limited edition Light the Way™ candle. 100% of the sales price goes to support communities and clean water projects in the countries where Aveda sources their ingredients.

Best Beauty Schools In Florida

Aveda Institute South Florida / Beauty School Student Photoshoot

When researching the best beauty schools in Florida I wanted to take into account not just the quality of the beauty school’s education staff, but also the philosophy of the beauty school itself.  Like most states, Florida has an abundance of options when it comes to beauty schools that offer cosmetology courses and esthetician courses.  However, what separates the Florida beauty schools is when you look at the level of education you get, the quality of name recognition, and the philosophy by which the beauty schools build their reputation on.

Undoubtedly, the only option your left with is the EXCELLENT Aveda Institutes of Florida.  At the time of this blog post, there are four Aveda Institutes in Florida: Aveda Institute South Florida, Aveda Institute Orlando, Aveda Institute St. Petersburg, and the Aveda Institute of Tallahassee.  All of these beauty schools are run with the highest of talent and a company philosophy that is highly admired by the public.  One example of how Aveda differentiates itself from other beauty schools is their strong support in the development of a wind farm in Greensburg, Kansas; a community rebuiling in the greenest ways possible after being devastated by a tornado in 2007.  Aveda is delighted to support their environmentally conscious efforts.

Aveda is a beauty school and company that continually sets higher standards.  This is a quote from Aveda president Dominque Conseil, “As the first beauty company to achieve Cradle to Cradle endorsement, Aveda is recognized as a leader in ecologically intelligent design.  Designing and manufacturing products can be environmentally responsible when the environmental goals are factored into the concept at the very beginning.  At Aveda, we believe that authentic beauty cares for the environment which we inherited from our elders, and will leave generations that follow.”

It is this type of leadership and company philosophy that makes the Aveda Institutes of Florida the best decision when looking for a beauty school education.  You can read more about each Aveda Institute Florida beauty school location at their official website here.

A Spa Experience At The Aveda Institute South Florida

Aveda Florida

Aveda Institute South Florida

Beauty Schools are not usually depicted as being the source for high quality salon and spa type services.  However, I found my spa experience at the Aveda Institute of South Florida to be just as good, if not better, then spa experience I’ve had at 5 star hotels.  The building located at 4186 S. University Dr. in Davie, Florida is a relatively newer construction, so everything was clean and inviting.  When most people think of a massage service at a school they may expect to be receiving a service in an open room or a classroom… this is not the case whats so ever.  Each service has it’s own room for relaxation and privacy.

The main floor of the school is busy with upbeat music playing and customers shuffling to and from the clinic floor.  I waited in the retail department for a few moments while enjoying some of their tea that they have given me complimentary.  I was soon greeted by my massage therapist.  She took me through the hustle and bustle and into a side door.  It felt like I was walking through a secret door into a private oasis.  The mood completely changed when entering.  The room was tranquil, dimly lit with the soft warm glow of AVEDA’s amazing smelling candles.  At this point I was taken on a “sensory journey”.  After that she directed me through the quite tranquil hall into our private room.

I had asked for the hot stone massage treatment which I had never had before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.  I was pleasantly surprised how they used aroma therapy automatically as part of their AVEDA experience, even though I did not request this.  It felt like an added perk.  As the treatment began I was surprised at how much of a calming and almost spiritual experience it was.  I felt like my soul was relaxing along with my body.  The warm smooth stones felt amazing, and again, I couldn’t help but feel an inner peace by the fact I was having these warm stones from mother earth massaged against my skin.  I found the experience to be completely enlightening and stress relieving.  I felt rejuvenated through and through.

Not only was this experience one of the best I’ve ever had, since it was done at the AVEDA institute it was a fraction of the cost of what I would usually spend.  I do understand sometimes your experience is impacted by who you have as a massage therapist.  However, I know for a fact that I will be going back for more treatments.  If you live in the South Florida region I suggest you give them a try as well.  You can call to ask for a list of services or make an appointment at: 954-990-0484.

A Beauty School That Helps Keep The Earth Beautiful

I think it’s absolutely amazing that the Aveda Beauty Schools and salons are the first to create and use an aerosol with a net zero climate impact!  Below is some information from Aveda’s site about this new product called “Control Force”:

We care about the world we live in, so we couldn’t make an aerosol product without considering climate impact. We’re proud to say that Aveda is the first beauty manufacturer to fund renewable energy projects to offset the CO2 associated with the manufacture, transportation, and use of every Aveda aerosol hair spray sold globally, making it a more environmental choice.

At Aveda, we take energy use seriously. We reduce energy use whenever possible; choose renewable energy when reduction is not an option; and when conservation and renewable energy aren’t possible we purchase offsets—credits that balance our carbon emissions by investing in more environmentally responsible energy sources and projects.

We buy our offsets from NativeEnergy—a company partly owned by the nonprofit Intertribal Council On Utility Policy (COUP), an organization of Native American tribes. Through NativeEnergy Aveda is able to purchase offsets that invest in renewable energy projects like these:

- Wind Energy Development In India

- Greensburg Wind Farm Aveda supports the development of a wind farm in Greensburg, Kansas

- Clinton County Sanitary Landfill Gas Project (LFG)

To learn more about these projects, click here. To calculate the impact of your hairspray usage, visit the Control Force tab.
